Hunting in Dhorpatan, Nepal

Gifted with rich and varied biodiversity, this mountainous country Nepal shelters some of the world’s most rare animals. Rising ecological awareness make hunting contradictory adventure sport but Nepal is a superior land for hunter since 9th century. With proper license from Department of National Park & Wildlife and certain criteria, hunting is allowed in federal republic of Nepal.
Dhorpatan Hunting reserve is the only one spot in Nepal where licensed hunting is permitted. The area's vegetation is characterized by well-developed mixed-hardwood forest at lower elevation and many plant species of drier climate to the north. Surrounded with Trees like fir, pine, birch, rhododendron, hemlock, oak, juniper, spruce etc, the prime attraction for hunter is the blue sheep. Other animals like leopard, ghoral, serow, Himalayan Thar, Himalayan Black bear, barking deerm wild boar, rhesus macaque, langur, mouse hare, musk deer, wolf red panda, cheer pheasant and danphe can be seen in this reserve.

Besides hunting, Dhorpatan is also an attractive destination for the trekkers and wildlife enthusiasts as protection has enabled animal numbers to increase in this rarely visited area.It is here that you will also find the only hunting reserve set aside by the Government of Nepal.
Unlike many countries that support “canned hunting” (defined as: The sport or practice of killing animals that have been bred in captivity for the sole purpose of trophy hunting by international tourists), the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve has set aside a dedicated area where only certain “wild” species are allowed to be “culled”, thus controlling the general population in the area. It is only in particular seasons that controlled hunting occurs through the year, thus requiring a game license. This can be obtained through the ‘Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation’ within the Kathmandu area. However, it must be remembered that there is a limited amount of hunting operations who are able to cater for such expeditions and so it is good to look into this beforehand.

Season for Hunting -  September to May
Requirement -  All the government permit and fees.
